Corrections Internship
Akins High School is proud to announce for the 2nd year the TLPSCS certification program. This unique class has only been offered twice and has accomplished far more than expected. The program Texas Law, Public Safety, Correction and Security, comes from North Texas and is growing at a phenomenal rate. The program is designed to give students in insight in the correctional field with a challenging curriculum as well as hands on experience with actual Deputy Sheriffs working in Texas jails. This elite program takes a select few students (10-14) who have met the requirements that are only offered at Akins in the ABL²E academy. Students, who meet the minimum requirements, must apply by filling out an application. Once the applications are turned in a committee reviews the applications and narrows it down to 16 candidates. Those sixteen interviews for the positions in front of a panel who then grades them on a scale, the top students are chosen with alternates. Akins High School partners with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office and has been instrumental in the success of the students. After the yearlong course is completed students are certified and eligible to work at Texas jails. During the program students also receive OSHA and CPR certifications.
